Chapter Seven
Damn. ” Thane whispered, gritting his teeth as he finished the last exercise with his injured leg. Sitting on a chair, he allowed the aching extremity to rest gently on the highly polished cedar floor. At his feet, Paige smiled gamely up at him. Sweat rolled off his temples and down his jawline. He relaxed the white-knuckled grip he had on the sides of the chair.
“Great, Thane. You did it!” Paige said, rising to her full height and handing him a small towel. Jennifer Logan had shown him several exercises and it was up to Paige to see that he faithfully did them and to be his coach. She loved being in that role for him.
“Thanks…” He mopped his wrinkled brow with the towel. “I never realized how hard this would be, to bring this leg back to full strength.”
Paige went to the window and opened it. The early morning September breeze drifted in. Outside, it was another sunny day with the temperature hovering around fifty, though Paige knew that by noon it would warm up to the eighties. The room was a little too warm and stuffy, already, and Thane was sweating profusely from the mandatory exercises he performed every morning. Turning, she stood by the window watching him. He was dressed in gray sweatpants and a white T-shirt that showed off his magnificent chest and broad shoulders.
“You’re making progress,” she said.
“And I know the exercises hurt your leg, but it will be worth it.” Paige tried to sound cheerful and upbeat about it. And she tried to keep their relationship professional, though she had never forgotten his tender, unexpected kiss. How badly she yearned for more, but she was too frightened to trust her heart to him. The sooner Thane’s leg got back into shape, the sooner he’d be leaving Sedona—and her—forever. Heart twinging, Paige tried not to look at that too closely right now. He was a month into his recovery at the ranch and doing wonderfully. In fact, he was ahead of schedule, according to Dr. Briggs and Jennifer Logan. His sheer determination—the fact he pushed himself to his absolute limit, physically speaking—was the reason.
Wiping his mouth. Thane glanced over at her. The morning sun was behind Paige, shooting through the panes of the window and back lighting her. It was so hard not to stare like a hungry wolf at her. He had been spoiled with her living at the ranch house, a room away from him. The last month had been heaven for him—and hell.
“Yeah, well, I intend to keep ahead of schedule. I’m not letting Dr. Briggs talk me into staying here for a year in order to get back on my feet.” Next week, he went for his second surgery. There was a wheelchair next to him and he reached for it. Releasing the brake on one wheel, he eased it around. Paige came forward to help him shift from the wooden chair where he sat, back onto his “mount,” as he referred to the wheelchair.
